Teaching and Learning at P.S. 154

Math

At P.S. 154, we believe that children become mathematicians when they have many opportunities to think critically about real world math dilemmas. To encourage this type of engagement, P.S. 154 uses both the Go Math! curricular program and Contexts for Learning inquiry units of study. P.S. 154 also engages our Kindergarten – 5th graders in ST Math, an Internet-based conceptual learning program. Practice some math here!

The Social Studies

P.S. 154 students investigate the world! Starting with their own families in Kindergarten and ending with studies of Mexican immigration in 5th grade, students consider several overarching essential questions during each unit of study.

The Arts

Students at P.S. 154 have the opportunity to participate in both fine art and dance classes. In addition, our 5th graders have the opportunity to participate in our annual musical through an after school drama club. During the 2013 – 2014 school year, students performed The Little Mermaid.

Inquiry Learning in Our Chicken Coop and Garden

P.S. 154 students utilize our outdoor garden and chicken coop as hands-on learning environments, investigating and recording chicken behaviors, identifying and pulling weeds, harvesting fruits and vegetables, and encouraging the community to take care of its outdoor environment.

Literacy

P.S. 154 students and teachers in grades K - 5 utilize in the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project units of study in reading and writing. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade utilize the SuperKids program to develop phonemic awareness skills while students in 2nd and 3rd grade utilize the Wilson Fundations curricular program.

Literacy in our upper grades (3rd – 5th grade) is departmentalized into two different literacy blocks. The first block, Literature & Art, focuses on fiction reading and writing, while the second block, Research & Information, integrates non-fiction reading and writing with the social studies.
